2008 Hallows Eve: Slaughter on Second Street

Hallows Eve: Slaughter on Second Street is an 2008 independent slasher movie written, directed and produced by PJ Starks and Rodney Newton utilizing only resources local to them, shooting the movie in their local community of Owensboro, Kentucky and making use of the local talent to be the victims of their evil creation. Here is the synopsis:

Days before the annual opening of Slaughter on Second Street, Owensboro’s premiere haunted attraction, a tragedy befalls one of their own. Despite pleas from the manager, Buck Masters, the attraction is shut down until the mystery is solved. In his frustration, Buck devises a plan to get the haunt back on its feet and make some extra money while he’s at it.

Despite its horror cliches and sometimes silly dialouge, the film is a lot of fun and I love the Scooby Doo references. A solid horror film that won’t scare most seasoned horror fans, but should bring a few laughs and applause from fans who love a twist on the typical slasher film. Video was uploaded to Rodney Newton's YouTube channel. Rated TV MA for gore and strong language.

1984 One Halloween Night

One Halloween Night is a 1984 family friendly Halloween special written, directed and edited by Mark Kalbfeld, who also uploaded this video to his Vimeo account. That's all I can figure out about this special. I tried to write this synopsis below because I couldn't find one online.

It's about Jason and his dog Spunky who witness a spaceship land on earth from a far, two aliens emerge who are out to conquer the planet. The boy and his dog track the aliens to a Halloween party and they must figure out who the intruders are to warn the party goers.

What are the odds of me finding two Halloween specials in the same year both starring puppets that I could not find any other info about either online? The first one I posted was 1990's It's Halloween, which is the better one of the two IMO. But this one is also very well made and just as fun to watch.

1991 Kingdom of the Vampire

Kingdom of the Vampire is one of many shot-on-video indie horror movies that director J.R. Bookwalter and Tempe Entertainment made during the 1980s and 1990s. If you intend to take this movie seriously like a John Carpenter flick....forget it! This is a Tempe Production. Tempe Movies are all about Black Humor, Gore, and Memorable Special Make-up effects.

The plot involves Jeff who works the night shift at a video rental store, then comes home to his domineering mother, who has the grisly habit of slaughtering neighborhood children to satisfy her insatiable vampire bloodlust. One day Jeff meets Nina, a girl who falls for Jeff's timid ways for some reason. This draws the ire of Mom and sets them all on a road to an inevitable collision.

The only good part of the film, Mom goes mad on Halloween night and munches on a handful of trick or treaters unlucky enough to call at her door. Fans of extremely low-budget horror fare might want to check it out, but everyone else who doesn't have that particular acquired taste would do better to steer clear of this one. Rated MA not for kids.

1998 Filmonsters: The Werewolf Reborn! and Frankenstein Reborn!

Filmonsters was a line of PG-rated creature features made by Full Moon Pictures that are based on Universal's classic movie monsters. The Charles Band-produced franchise didn't last long as The Werewolf Reborn! and Frankenstein Reborn! were the only two films in the series that ever got made despite the graveyard intro showing all the other potential Filmonsters to come.

Both films are aimed at a fairly young audience, so neither of them are all that horrifying and they both feature teenage girl protagonists. They're not bad but they feel like mediocre episodes of "Goosebumps" or "Are You Afraid of the Dark?". Each film was released on VHS in October 1998 followed by a Double Feature DVD release in 2003.

FILMONSTERS! - The Werewolf Reborn! and Frankenstein Reborn! Trailers:

Frankenstein Reborn! - Thirteen-year-old Anna Frankenstein (Haven Burton) is intrigued by the secret experiments of her eccentric uncle Victor (Jaason Simmons, "Baywatch"), but her curiosity soon turns to total terror when she's confronted by Uncle Victor's latest creation - a hideous-looking monster with the soul of a man, stitched together and reanimated from the bodies of the dead. Also stars Ben Gould from "Saved by the Bell: The New Class".

The Werewolf Reborn! - Fourteen-year-old Eleanor Crane (Ashley Lynn Cafagna, "The Bold and the Beautiful", "Saved by the Bell: The New Class") goes to visit her older cousin Peter (Robin Downes, "Babylon 5") in a remote Eastern European village, and receives an unexpectedly cold welcome from the villagers, who are plagued by a deadly curse - and from her cousin, who hides a deadly secret of his own. Also stars Len Lesser of "Seinfeld".

1985 Tall Tales & Legends - The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow

Tall Tales & Legends is a family friendly anthology tv series of 9 episodes that adapted various American-based folk tales and stories of bravery. It ran from 1985-1987 on Showtime as well as The Disney Channel. Executively Produced by Fred Fuchs and tv/film actress Shelley Duvall who also served as narrator following the success of her first anthology series called Faerie Tale Theatre. The series was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award. It was followed up by a four-part anthology series, titled Nightmare Classics.

Washington Irving's classic 1820 story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is retold in the first episode of the series that originally aired on September 25, 1985. Ed Begley Jr. stars as Ichabod Crane, a timid schoolteacher who faces a headless horseman one dark Halloween night. Cast also includes Beverly D'Angelo as Katrina Van Tassel, Charles Durning as Uncle Doffue, and Tim Thomerson as Brom Bones.

Several episodes were issued on VHS by CBS/Fox Video in the 1980s. Lyrick Studios made it a nine video VHS series in 1998. Koch Entertainment released the entire series on DVD in 2005, available as 9 separate DVDs or together as a box set. The complete series was rereleased again, this time in a three-DVD set, by E1 Entertainment in 2009. The video below was ripped from the Lyrick VHS release.

1994 Without Warning

Without Warning is an American CBS TV movie directed by Robert Iscove. Much like WNUF Halloween Special, Ghostwatch and The War of the Worlds, this film is presented as if it were an actual live event and featured veteran news anchor Sander Vanocur and reporter Bree Walker as themselves covering a breaking news story of three meteor fragments crashing into the Earth's Northern Hemisphere. The casting of recognizable actors, Jane Kaczmarek, John de Lancie, and Ron Canada as reporters in remote locations, plus a faux interview with noted author Arthur C. Clarke, was expected to alleviate any concerns that the story being shown was actually happening. The broadcast takes place on and premiered on Halloween night, October 31, 1994, with trick or treaters featured in several news reports within. The executive producer was David L. Wolper, who produced a number of mockumentary-style films from the 1960s onward.

To avoid the panic that surrounded Ghostwatch's 1992 airing in the United Kingdom and the War of the Worlds radio drama from 1938, CBS had warnings during the commercial breaks stating that the film was completely fictional. Despite this, CBS received dozens of calls regarding whether the events were actually happening. The area's ABC, Fox, and NBC affiliates were also flooded with complaints, asking them why they were not covering this event at the same time CBS was. In several other markets, including Detroit, Michigan's WJBK, and San Diego, California's KFMB-TV, refused to even air the movie. A DVD was released on July 8, 2003, nearly nine years after the film's initial, and only, showing on CBS. However, it has since been shown outside the United States, such as the UK where it aired on Sci-Fi, minus the commercial break warnings. Below is the broacast with commercials edited out.

1988 How To Carve Great Faces For Halloween

VHS SYNOPSIS: Join the legendary Pumpkin Man himself, Gordon "Gordy" Falk, as he shows you everything you need to know how to carve the most spectacular pumpkin faces on your block. It's quick, easy, and fun. Anybody can do it. All you need is a one small knife, a large spoon, and of course a pumpkin. You won't believe how simple it is to turn your pumpkin into the best Jack O'Lantern you've ever seen. Have a Great Pumpkin and Carve Safely.

Gordy handcarved 1,000 different pumpkin faces each October in Wisconsin. What began as a favor to carve pumpkins for friends at Halloween parties, grew into huge displays at various public venues that attracted more than 50,000 spectators. I was very sad to hear that he passed away last year. He was a man with a big heart, he was always ready to make your day with a playful antic sure to cheer you up. All children loved him, he was indeed a Pied Piper. RIP.

2004 Season of Screams - Knott's Scary Farm's Halloween Haunt

Season of Screams is a documentary that traces the story behind Knott's Scary Farm's Halloween Haunt, a seasonal Halloween event held at Knott's Berry Farm in which the Buena Park, California theme park is transformed into "160 acres of horror", via a series of roaming monsters, terrifying mazes and scare zones. As of 2010, it was said to be the first, largest and longest-running Halloween event to be held at a theme park.

Originally released on DVD in 2004 and sold at Knott’s Berry Farm during the 32nd annual Knott’s Scary Farm season, Season of Screams reveals how the Halloween Haunt all got started back in 1973 and also highlights the recent 2003-2004 events. The DVD is out of print and used copies now go for upwards of $99 online. Thank’s to the film’s director, David Love, we can now watch the feature-length documentary below or via his YouTube channel.

1989 UFO Abduction

UFO Abduction is a 1989 found footage sci-fi horror film written, directed, filmed, and produced by Dean Alioto on a budget of $6,500 through IndieSyndicate Productions. The film is designed to appear to be a genuine 1983 home video recording portraying the last known whereabouts of a Connecticut family named the Van Heeses who are terrorized by extraterrestrials during a birthday celebration.

The master copy of UFO Abduction was destroyed in a warehouse fire at the distribution company, preventing the film's wide-release on VHS video in 1989. But Dean Alioto still had the original tapes and 3/4 inch copy of the film which lead to the first official release to DVD and Digital download in 2018. It was re-released in 2020 by AGFA on Blu-ray with a new upscaled transfer of the original 3/4" tape. The release also includes the 2017 director's cut of the film, as well as a commentary track by the director.

The film does not mention Halloween but the opening crawl says it was supposedly shot on October 8, 1983. Dean Alioto and Paul Chitlik remade UFO Abduction in 1998, with a much larger budget ($1.2 million) and professional actors, into Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County (aka The McPherson Tape), which takes place on Thanksgiving instead of October. The titles of both films has resulted in a great deal of confusion, both the original and remake are referred to as “The McPherson Tape.”

Here is the synopsis: On a typical fall evening in 1983, a young man was videotaping his niece's 5th birthday party. As the night's strange occurrences took place, he kept his video camera running, recording the entire event.

1985 Terror on Tape

Terror on Tape is a 1985 compilation of gore/nude scenes from 1960s-1980s horror/exploitation films. The wraparound segments take place on Halloween night where a bookwormish nerd (Mark Fenske), construction worker (Tim Noyes), and female dominatrix (Michelle Bauer) visit an old video store through out the night asking the owner for scary movies to rent. Something to make their skin crawl because they claim they have never been scared before.

The demented video store owner (Cameron Mitchell) obliges and shows them loads of bad gore clips and nude scenes from various horror flicks released by long gone distributor Continental Video, who also put this video together. The reason for this compilation, basically it was Continental's way of plugging their own video line. I liked the cheesy wraparound skits, they are great fun to watch.

Rated MA for Mature Audiences Only, Not for Kids!

1990 It's Halloween

It's Halloween is a 1990 special with characters created by Grey Seal Puppets, a national touring company that writes and performs puppetry productions in theatres, schools, libraries and on camera since 1976. The opening credits say the special is sponsored by McDonald's and presented by WSOC-TV channel 9, a dual ABC/Telemundo-affiliated TV station licensed to Charlotte, North Carolina.

Other than that I can't find any other info about this online. I tried to write this synopsis because I couldn't find one: Timmy, a lonely trick or treater, is laughed at by the big kids because his Halloween costume is not scary. While looking for a scarier costume, Timmy finds a book of spells and incantations that belongs to an old witch, who must stop Timmy before he casts too many spells.

The fun family story is very much like other specials of the time and the puppets are very well made and remind me of 1981's The Crown of Bogg, The Wickedest Witch, & Whoopties Hallowe'en both from 1989 and Eureeka's Castle: Halloween Special from the 1990's. And I like opening sequence complete with vintage Apple computers.
