2000 Sleepy Hollow High

Sleepy Hollow High is a 2000 independent horror film from the directing team of Chris Arth and Kevin Summerfield. A reviewer from imdb.com had this to say: Most people would look at this movie and say "Bad Movie, Bad Acting, Bad all around." Take into consideration that this movie was made with a limited budget, small time actors, first time writers/directors, and may have served as a great learning tool. This movie was not meant to be a perfect movie, was not meant to be one of the top 10 movies ever made. It's just meant to provide entertainment.

Here is the synopsis of the film: Terror graduates when five delinquent classmates must perform community service at Sleepy Hollow Park Grounds, a place notorious for vandalism... and many unsolved disappearances. As the afternoon unfolds, the students begin to realize that someone is taking the Legend of Sleepy Hollow too far, and that everyone is a suspect – from the teachers and counselors of Sleepy Hollow High, to their fellow classmates and each other... even the possibility of the legendary headless horseman himself!

1985 Tall Tales & Legends - The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow

Tall Tales & Legends is a family friendly anthology tv series of 9 episodes that adapted various American-based folk tales and stories of bravery. It ran from 1985-1987 on Showtime as well as The Disney Channel. Executively Produced by Fred Fuchs and tv/film actress Shelley Duvall who also served as narrator following the success of her first anthology series called Faerie Tale Theatre. The series was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award. It was followed up by a four-part anthology series, titled Nightmare Classics.

Washington Irving's classic 1820 story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is retold in the first episode of the series that originally aired on September 25, 1985. Ed Begley Jr. stars as Ichabod Crane, a timid schoolteacher who faces a headless horseman one dark Halloween night. Cast also includes Beverly D'Angelo as Katrina Van Tassel, Charles Durning as Uncle Doffue, and Tim Thomerson as Brom Bones.

Several episodes were issued on VHS by CBS/Fox Video in the 1980s. Lyrick Studios made it a nine video VHS series in 1998. Koch Entertainment released the entire series on DVD in 2005, available as 9 separate DVDs or together as a box set. The complete series was rereleased again, this time in a three-DVD set, by E1 Entertainment in 2009. The video below was ripped from the Lyrick VHS release.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow - Oct.31,1980 NBC Broadcast

This is the October 31, 1980 NBC broadcast of the made for tv film The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. With hosting segments featuring Gary Coleman and Steve Allen, and a whole wonderful package of commercials and news clips. Missing is the very beginning - probably missing an intro hosting segment - and missing the very end of the last hosting segment. The film was later officially released to VHS but never on DVD.

Jeff Goldblum's tall and gangly appearance is perfectly suited as Ichabod Crane, Meg Foster (those eyes are unmistakable) as Katrina von Tassel, and Dick Butkus gives a great supporting performance as insensitive Brom Bones. Filmed in Utah and directed by Henning Schellerup. Executive producer Charles Sellier was nominated for an Emmy Award for his work on the movie.

In a departure from the original story, the film ends with Ichabod arriving at Katrina's house and the Headless Horseman returning to the dark forest. It also introduces an original character, widow Thelma Dumkey; while Brom Bones and Ichabod Crane are rivals for Katrina, Thelma is Katrina's rival for Brom Bones. Thelma and Brom become engaged at the end of the film. Here is the IMDb synopsis below:

Angered that Katrina has grown fond of schoolmaster Crane, Brom Bones determines to scare off the interloper by filling his head with spooky tales of a Headless Horseman. Crane disparages the legends, until one fateful ride home in the dark of night.

2007 Headless Horseman

Headless Horseman is a SciFi Channel (now called Syfy) film the that's based on the Legend of the Sleepy Hollow villain and originally aired in October 2007. The movie takes the tack that the Washington Irving story was the "white-washed" version and the events in this horror film is the real story. It stars Richard Moll and Billy Aaron Brown and is directed by Anthony C. Ferrante.

It's about seven college kids who take a shortcut on their way to a Halloween party and unfortunately end up in Wormwood a small town in the middle of nowhere, where the spirit of the Headless Horseman hunts them one by one.

The acting and characters were average, and the special effects were pretty good for a SciFi film. If you just want a little entertainment for an evening in, then this film is watchable, it's not great but if you don't expect too much then you can make it to the end.

2004 The Hollow

A 2004 horror film that tells the story of Ian Cranston (Kevin Zegers), a high school teen who just found out he's the descendant of Ichabod Crane. With the help of his girlfriend Karen (Kaley Cuoco), a local bully named Brody (Nick Carter), and the old cemetery caretaker Claus Van Ripper (Stacy Keach), Ian now must stop the newly resurrected Headless Horseman on Halloween.

The film is rated R but when it premiered on the ABC Family Channel, on October 24, 2004, it was trimmed slightly to eliminate the violence of the Headless Horseman's attacks, and several of the lines had to be re-dubbed to eliminate promiscuous references and graphic profanity. Another version of the film shown on the Syfy Channel was sparingly cut and remains almost completely intact.

The Hollow is a silly campy film that's obviously aimed at a young audience. It's definitely not as good as Tim Burton's and Johnny Depp's Sleepy Hollow, but it is an entertaining film for what it is, a low budget straight to DVD release. Just grab some popcorn and enjoy it.

Here's a Youtube Playlist of the whole film:

2003 The Haunted Pumpkin Of Sleepy Hollow

It's Halloween and friends Nick and Kate are on a mission to find the biggest pumpkin in the patch. Unfortunately, the pumpkin they choose is haunted by the ghost of the Headless Horseman, and he wants his head back.

The only Sleepy Hollow/Headless Horseman video posted this year. A family friendly modern rendition of the Headless Horseman story with mild scariness mixed with humor. An okay version not as good as Disney's, but it does have a catchy tune much like the theme song from What's New Scooby Doo.

1970 Tales of Washington Irving

This 1970 animated special contains two versions of Washington Irving's most popular stories; The Legend of Sleepy Hollow - about the headless horseman (who makes a too brief appearance), and Rip Van Winkle - the man who fell asleep and awoke years later. It originally aired on TV between Halloween and Thanksgiving in the early 1970s and was later released on VHS home video by MGM in 1987 but it's currently out of print.

The animation is not all that good, but the beautiful autumn colors in the spooky backgrounds and the chilling musical score make up for it. Many may recognize the cast of famous voices from old Hanna Barbara cartoons like The Flintstones and The Jetsons and the voice of the classic Looney Tunes shorts, the multi talented, Mel Blanc.

1988 Legend of Sleepy Hollow (Rabbit Ears)

Rabbit Ears is a production company that created audio stories in the 1980's for the radio, using famous actors to do narration. They were high quality productions, featuring classic stories, and folk tales. Later they produced the stories on a combined package of an audio cassette and a book. Finally they decided to merge the books with the audio into a video.

This version of Sleepy Hollow is narrated by Glenn Close with stunning still illustrations by Robert Van Nutt and is set to outstanding music by Tim Story. This actually got the true version of the original tale down to the last scene. Unlike the Disney version, the Headless Horseman in this adaption does not carry a sword. But still very enjoyable for kids and adults as well.

1971 Funky Phantom - Headless Horseman

Similar to Hanna-Barbera's successful Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, The Funky Phantom featured three teenagers Skip, April, Augie and their dog Elmo who release the ghosts of an American Revolution patriot named Mudsy and his pet cat Boo from a longcase clock. Mudsy and Boo now accompany there new friends on many mysteries, always giving an invisible helping hand. The voice of Mudsy is identical to the character Snagglepuss, down to the use of Snagglepuss's catchphrases, even. Micky Dolenz from the Monkees voices the character of Skip.

In this episode Mudsy, April, Skip, Augie, Elmo and Boo visit the famous town of Sleepy Hollow. April becomes a little jealous when the boys begin flirting with Laurie Elwood, the manager of Sleepy Hollow Inn, who introduces them to the great, great, great grandson of Ichabod Crane. The gang soon discovers the town's ghostly legend, The Headless Horseman, is all too real as he eventually kidnaps Icky Crane. They also clash with Richard Travers V, a descendant of the town bully. This is the fifth episode of a total of 17 made in 1971-72.

1955 Disney's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow with Intro

This version of Disney's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow was an episode of the "Disneyland" TV series that originally aired on October 26th, 1955 but this video was recorded from the Disney Channel in the early 90's. The cool things about this video is it begins with an animated history of the life of author Washington Irving and is hosted by Walt Disney himself. I remember this airing on the Disney Channel on Halloween night. I so wish this version was available on DVD. Part 1 below contains the history of Washington Irving and Parts 2 and 3 contain the first and second half of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow animated Disney special.

Update here is just the intro and animated history of Washington Irving:

1999 Night of the Headless Horseman

1999's Night of the Headless Horseman is a classic retelling of Washington Irving's, "The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow". I am a HUGE fan of the story and I have seen just about every show, special, cartoon and movie based on the famous tale. This CGI animated version actually follows Irving's original story better than most. The atmosphere is creepy, especially for a computer-generated film, the musical score is effective and the voices, William H. Macy as Ichabod Crane, Tia Carrere as Katrina Van Tassel and Luke Perry as Brom Bones, are dead-on. It is not perfect, and not nearly as good as Tim Burton's "Sleepy Hollow" or Disney's "Ichabod and Mr. Toad," but a truly enjoyable ride through Sleepy Hollow nonetheless.

1998 Wishbone in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

I love collecting movies, shows and cartoons based on the classic story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow". This episode of Wishbone and "Night of the Headless Horseman" are my two favorites in my collection, not that there's anything wrong with Bing Crosby's rendition, of course.

In this episode, the Jack Russell terrier with the vivid imagination is Ichabod Crane the school teacher from the Washington Irving classic. If you just judge this video in terms of Irving's original story, it is an above-average effort and faithful to the original but it might be too scary for children under 7.

This was originally broadcast in the fall of 1997 as a prime-time special in time for Halloween. The show tried to up the ante for their first hour-long effort and I think they succeeded admirably.

Again, this is one of my favorites. It definitely teaches kids about literature, and of course, having a cute little dog helps. Wishbone in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow also called Halloween Hound: The Legend of the Creepy Collars.

1976 The Headless Horseman of Halloween - The Scooby-Doo Show

This has to be the BEST Scooby episode ever. The gang is having fun at a Halloween costume party with their friend who happens to be a descendant of Ichabod Crane. Their fun turns into a nightmare when the headless horseman shows up. The mislead is well placed, as well as the "bad guy's" slips. Finally, the solution and motive is on the plausible side. Watching this makes me feel like I am actually there experiencing the fear along with Shaggy, Scooby and Scoob's loveable relative Scooby Dum. I absolutely LOVE this episode of The Scooby Doo Show and It's great for the whole family. Enjoy!

1973 The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

This is another animated version of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow worth recommending, but not to be confused with the Disney version. This was produced by Dave Adams and Nick Bosustow of "Bosustow Entertainment" in 1973. Some of their productions were often shown in theatres in the 60's and 70's, but this short film was released to video by Little Golden Books/Western Publishing in 1992. It packs a lot of story into just 13 minutes. Creepy enough to be fun, while it will not terrify the kids either, and is perfect for a Halloween party.
